According to the IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Media Tablet and eReader Tracker, 10.1 million media tablets were shipped in the fourth quarter of 2010, more than double the 4.5 million units shipped in the third quarter. Apple’s share came down from 93% in the third quarter of 2010 to 73% in the fourth quarter of 2010, but still reflected Apple’s strong leadership position. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab was the primary competitor in the holiday season, beating other players to market and capturing more than 17% share, while a number of smaller regional players also participated.
The Tracker showed that the e-book reader market also picked up significantly in the fourth quarter. Strong sales of Amazon’s Kindle, which was refreshed in August and priced more aggressively, as well as significant gains from competitors such as Pandigital, Barnes & Noble, Hanvon, and Sony among others, contributed to market growth. Acer has reported non-consolidated revenues of NT$28.05 billion (US$951 million) for February 2011, down 15.9% sequentially and hitting the lowest monthly level since July 2010.
Revenues for the first two months of 2011 were NT$61.42 billion, showing a 35.6% decline from a year earlier.
Acer’s major contract partner, Compal, also saw revenues drop in February 2011 compared to the prior month and the same period in 2010.
Acer began shipping new models to its channel clients at the end of February, according to market observers. The notebook vendor is expected to post a substantial sequential rise in March revenues, said the observers, adding that its contract partners will also benefit.
ASRock and Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS) have reported sequential decreases in consolidated revenues for February 2011 of 37.1% and 30.5%, respectively.
Affected by fewer working days and labor shortages in China, ASRock’s consolidated revenues declined to NT$660 million (US$22.46 million) in February from the NT$1.05 billion posted in January. February sales also represented the lowest monthly level since June 2010.
ASRock said it has outsourced some motherboard production to Hong Kong-based Fittec Electronics due to the shortage of workers in China. Fittec has production facilities in China, and its Vietnam plant recently commenced operations.
Fellow motherboard company ECS registered NT$3.31 billion in February consolidated revenues, down over 30% from NT$4.76 billion in January. On an annual basis, however, February sales were up 25.7% from the same period of 2010.
Both ASRock and ECS expect March revenues to rebound following a weak February, and return to a sequential growth track.

Facing strong competition from Apple’s iPad 2, notebook brand vendors pointed out that iPad 2′s low price of US$499 is leaving tablet PC models with relatively higher prices no room for survival and there are already 2-3 notebook brand vendors that plan to postpone their tablet PC model’s launch schedule until after they redesign the specifications and reduce the related costs, according to sources from notebook players.
The sources pointed out that the tablet PC war that was expected in April may turn out to played only by the iPad product line, since iPad 2 is lighter and thinner than the previous generation device and is faster and has even more features at the same price level than the previous model. Asustek Computer has recently started selling its latest PC products with Sandy Bridge chipsets in retail channels, and Gigabyte Technology is also set to release its Sandy Bridge notebooks in March.
Asustek has launched three new notebook models based on improved Sandy Bridge chipsets including the flagship CG8350 with an Intel Core i7-2600 processor, 6GB DDR3 memory and a Nvidia GeForce GTX460 discrete graphics card at NT$46,900 (US$1,597), targeting the high-end market; and the mainstream CM6650 with an Intel Core i5-2300 processor and 4GB of memory plus support of USB 3.0 and SATA 6GB at between NT$17,900-26,900.
Asustek also launched a new all-in-one PC, the ET2400 IGTS, adopting an Intel Core i5-2400s processor and a 23.6-inch touchscreen display with USB 3.0 support at about NT$40,000.
Meanwhile, Gigabyte is also set to launch its in-house-designed 15.6-inch P2532 notebook featuring improved Sandy Bridge platform in March.
Gigabyte also announced February revenues of NT$2.74 billion, down 45.36% from NT$5.01 billion in January.
Hewlett-Packard (HP) has launched several new Intel Sandy Bridge-based notebooks in Taiwan, and as the company is starting to mass ship the notebook models in March, its upstream OEM partners including Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry), Quanta Computer and Inventec will all benefit, according to sources from component makers.
HP Taiwan pointed out that WebOS will be the core of the company’s strategy in 2011 and the market will see HP design WebOS-based applications for the company’s three major product lines – tablet PCs, desktop PCs and notebooks in 2011.
Due to issues with Intel’s 6 series chipsets, HP reduced its original orders for February by about 5-10%, causing a reduction in Quanta’s overall notebooks shipments to only 3.2 million units and Inventec’s to only one million units in the month. But as Intel has fixed the chipset problem and has started shipping them again, HP’s orders should boost its partners’ shipments in March.
However, starting in April, Quanta’s orders from HP are expected to drop to only about 800,000-1.2 million units each month for the rest of the second quarter and the volume drop is expected to bring a significant pressure on the company, the sources noted.
HP’s newly launched notebooks are mostly from its Pavillion dv4, dv6 and g series. In addition to the upgraded processor, HP has adopted several new technologies and hardware such as USB 3.0, DLNA certification, CoolSense for temperature monitoring, wireless display and Best Audio sound system, into these models to allow better multimedia experience and faster transmission speed, according to HP Taiwan.

Global notebook brand vendors including Hewlett-Packard (HP), Acer, Asustek Computer and Micro-Star International (MSI), facing strong competition from Apple’s iPad, are changing strategies to allow their netbook models to feature capability of a tablet PC and hope the new strategy will help them land orders from the enterprise market, according to sources from upstream component makers.
HP, which originally let its handheld device department handling related R&D for its TouchPad tablet PC, is already considering to let its notebook department to deal with the development of the next-generation TouchPad and the team is already in discussion of the device’s specifications and market position, the sources noted.
The sources pointed out that the market’s strong attention of the tablet PC industry has significantly impacted the demand of notebook, but the sources believe netbook with features of tablet PC will still help the brand vendors to receive attention from enterprise buyers.
Asustek is already giving its 10.1-inch Eee Pad tablet PC an external keyboard to allow the device to become a fully-functional PC with USB extensibility.
Meanwhile, Acer is also planning to avoid from the current iPad 2 wave, and will develop new netbook with concept of tablet PC to counter Apple’s iPad 2.
In additional news, HP is set to ship 45-48 million notebooks including tablet PCs in 2011, but since the company only shipped 2.9-3 million and 2.5-2.6 million notebooks in January and February, respectively, HP has recently placed several rush orders to its upstream partners in order to catch up with its goal and the company internally is aiming to ship over four million notebooks in March.

With its purchase of Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi GST), hard drive maker Western Digital (WDC) will pad its lead in the global hard disk drive (HDD) market, giving it nearly double the market share of the number two supplier Seagate Technology. With the purchase, WDC will claim 49.6% share of global HDD shipments based on fourth-quarter totals, compared to 29.4% for Seagate. This will give WDC a lead of 20.2 percentage points over Seagate, up from a mere two points without the acquisition.
The Hitachi purchase will allow WDC to enter the critical enterprise HDD segment. WDC currently is only a marginal player in the enterprise HDD market, with nearly all of its sales going instead to the market for consumer drives, an area that includes products like desktop and mobile PCs, set-top boxes and video game consoles. Of all of the major HDD suppliers, Western Digital in the fourth quarter of 2010 had the smallest share of any company’s total shipments going to the enterprise segment, at less than 1%. In comparison, 65% of Seagate’s HDD shipments and 27% of Hitachi GST’s shipments went to the enterprise market. (continuare…)

The sources pointed out that the tablet PC war that was expected in April may turn out to played only by the iPad product line, since iPad 2 is lighter and thinner than the previous generation device and is faster and has even more features at the same price level than the previous model.
As for the first-generation iPad, Apple’s strategy of reducing its price to only US$399 has given its competitors strong pressure since most branded vendors do not yet have a model with such a price level that they can compete with.
Therefore, players are already working on rearrange their launch schedule and will delay the launch for another 1-2 months before they start selling; some models that were unveiled from before may even not appear in the channel.
The sources pointed out that tablet PCs will need to be priced below US$399 to have chance to enter the tablet PC battlefield, and none of the current Wintel or ARM/Android platform are capable of achieving such a price level. Therefore, the sources believe that non-iPad products achieving 20% of market share in 2011 would already be a great result for these players.

Amid rumors that Apple is making adjustments in its iPad 2 design and is also facing issues over the device’s touch panel yields, sources from upstream component makers pointed out that the announcement of the iPad 2 is still expected to be in the second quarter, but mass production volumes are expected to drop. However, both Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) and Apple declined to comment on the rumors.
The sources pointed out that Apple still maintains its plans to mass produce the iPad 2 by the end of February; however, affected by low touch panel yields and an adjustment in specifications, Apple’s production volume forecast for the first quarter is expected to drop from 400,000-600,000 units originally to only 300,000-400,000 units.
Although most market watchers currently have strong concerns over Apple’s panel yields and supply stability, the sources pointed out that since Apple currently has LG Display, Samsung Electronics and Chimei Innolux (CMI) to backup its panel supply, the company is unlikely to delay its iPad 2 shipments because of the insufficient panel supply.
The sources pointed out that most upstream component makers still have not yet received notification from Apple to delay shipments; therefore they believe the mass production schedule is still as originally planned.
The sources pointed out that there were about 1-1.5 million units worth of iPad inventory in the channel in January and since Apple only ordered about 1.8-2 million iPads in January, it indicates that Apple is already set to phase out the first-generation iPad and let iPad 2 take its place. However, if iPad 2′s mass production does not go as expected, the channel may face strong inventory pressure.
