Compal Electronics shipped 2.7 million notebooks in April 2009, surpassing Quanta Computer’s 2.3 million units and Wistron’s 1.9 million units mainly thanks to contributions from netbooks, according to sources at notebook makers.

In addition to netbooks, notebook orders from Compal’s clients in North America also helped the company increase its shipment from the 2.6 million units recorded in March.

Quanta’s notebook shipments in April declined from the 2.7 million units seen in the previous month due to several factors including a shortage of components such as keyboard controller ICs, panels and PCBs, as well the loss of some Apple orders to electronic manufacturing service (EMS) providers.

Wistron also saw its notebook shipments in April drop from the 2.2 million units shipped in March.

Compal is expected to see its notebook shipments drop in May and hold level on-month in June to reach second-quarter shipments of 7.2-7.5 million units. Meanwhile, Quanta is expected to see shipments increase in May and in June to reach shipments above 7.6 million units for the quarter, the sources noted.

Wistron is expected to see notebook shipments of 5.8-6.1 million in the second quarter.

Quanta announced consolidated revenues of NT$55.17 billion (US$1.68 billion) for April, drops of 13% on month and 25% on year. Compal announced revenues of NT$43.77 billion, a drop of 1.5% on month, but an increase of 43.7% on year, while Wistron announced figures of NT$40.72 billion, a drop of 11.6% on month, but an increase of 32.8% on year.
