Apple is taking down CEOs from competitors

News@com | Monday April 4 2011 10:53 | Comments (0)

Although Acer ex-CEO and president Gianfranco Lanci and the company’s board members’ inability to reach a consensus was the main reason for the CEO’s resignation, the strong impact from Apple’s products is the other key reason for Lanci leaving the company, according to sources from notebook makers, who added that in addition to Acer, Nokia’s ex-CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo and LG Electronics’ ex-CEO Nam Yong both stepped down because of their inability to defend their companies from Apple’s fierce competition.

The sources pointed out that the appearance of Apple’s iPad significantly impacted the netbook market in 2010 and messed up Acer’s lineup for the entry-level notebook market, causing the company to see almost no growth in shipments. Although Acer revealed its own tablet PC products in November 2010 aiming to grab back some market share, comparing to either iPad or Asustek’s Eee Pad, Acer’s devices are still outmatched in terms of both hardware and software.

As for Acer’s smartphone business, since the business is currently still facing losses, Acer is still incapable of competing against other first-tier smartphone brands, especially Apple, the sources noted.

Since first-tier smartphone and PC brands are still unable to find an effective strategy to counter Apple’s advance with Lanci the most recent victim of Apple’s assault, the sources believe executives of brand vendors such as Motorola, Sony, Toshiba, Asustek Computer and Lenovo are all in danger of being dragged off by the wave.

Meanwhile, Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Dell, which have strong bases in the enterprise market, are monitoring the tablet PC market closely and are not in a hurry launch their tablet PCs, noted the sources, adding that due to the limitations of its hardware platform and operating system, iPad is currently still unable to grab any large market share from the enterprise market; therefore allowing notebook vendors a place to earn profits.

Samsung begins mass production of transparent LCD panels

News@com | Monday April 4 2011 10:52 | Comments (0)

Samsung Electronics has announced that it began mass production of 22-inch transparent LCD panels in March. The panels come in the black-and-white and color types, and have a contrast ratio of 500:1 with WSXGA+ (1680×1050) resolution.

Compared with the conventional LCD panels that use backlight units (BLUs) and have 5% transparency, Samsung said its transparent LCD panel boasts a transparency rate of over 20% for the black-and-white type and over 15% for the color type. With the high transparency rates, the models enable users to look right through them like glass, the vendor said.

In addition, the new Samsung transparent LCD panel consumes 90% less electricity compared with a conventional LCD panel using BLU. It is because a transparent LCD panel utilizes ambient light such as sunlight, which consequently reduces the dependency on electricity for generating power, Samsung said.

“Transparent displays will have a wide range of use in all industry areas as an efficient tool for delivering information and communication,” said Younghwan Park, senior VP of Samsung Electronics LCD Business. “With the world’s first mass production of the transparent LCD panel, Samsung plans to lead the global transparent LCD market by developing various applications.”

HDD prices for OEM market to increase 5-10% in 2Q11

News@com | Monday April 4 2011 10:50 | Comments (0)

Due to a shortage of controller chips for motors used in hard disk drives, prices of HDDs in the OEM market are likely to increase by 5-10% in the second quarter. Prices in the channel rose 10-15% recently.

The shortage was caused by an interruption of production at the three wafer plants of Texas Instruments (TI) in Japan, which were damaged by the recent earthquake. TI will not be able to resume shipments from Japan until September, the sources noted.

TI and STMicroelectronics are the major suppliers for HDD motors to a number of HDD makers including Western Digital and Seagate.

Global shipments of HDDs are expected to top 100 million units in the second quarter compared to 160 million units shipped in the previous quarter, the sources estimated.

Acer CEO and president Gianfranco Lanci resigns

News@com | Monday April 4 2011 10:47 | Comments (0)

Acer CEO and president Gianfranco Lanci has resigned from the company, with immediate effect. Acer Chairman JT Wang takes acting role in the interim. The company has commenced with the planning of organizational and operational adjustments for the sustainable future of Acer.

The resignation was approved at a meeting of Acer’s Board of Directors today (March 31), and the company has communicated internally with its worldwide employees.

On the company’s future development, Lanci held different views from a majority of the board members, and could not reach a consensus following several months’ of dialog. They placed different levels of importance on scale, growth, customer value creation, brand position enhancement, and on resource allocation and methods of implementation.

The change does not affect current operations which are functioning as normal. Acer’s strong management team of multi-nationals has been well-informed and is committed to overseeing and implementing the company strategies, as does the amicable company relations with industry partners persist, said Acer. Acer will continue to push for globalization, follow its multi-brand and channel business model, develop competitive products and services, and foster closer relations with key vendors and channel partners.

Acer Chairman, JT Wang said,

“The personal computer remains the core of our business. We have built up a strong foundation and will continue to expand within, especially in the commercial PC segment. In addition, we are stepping into the new mobile device market, where we will invest cautiously and aim to become one of the leading players.”

“In this new ICT industry,” continued Wang, “Acer needs a period of time for adjustment. With the spirit of entrepreneurship, we will face new challenges and look to the future with confidence.”

Nearly 18 million media tablets and 12 million e-book readers shipped in 2010, says IDC

News@com | Friday March 11 2011 15:41 | Comments (0)

According to the IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Media Tablet and eReader Tracker, 10.1 million media tablets were shipped in the fourth quarter of 2010, more than double the 4.5 million units shipped in the third quarter. Apple’s share came down from 93% in the third quarter of 2010 to 73% in the fourth quarter of 2010, but still reflected Apple’s strong leadership position. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab was the primary competitor in the holiday season, beating other players to market and capturing more than 17% share, while a number of smaller regional players also participated.

The Tracker showed that the e-book reader market also picked up significantly in the fourth quarter. Strong sales of Amazon’s Kindle, which was refreshed in August and priced more aggressively, as well as significant gains from competitors such as Pandigital, Barnes & Noble, Hanvon, and Sony among others, contributed to market growth. Acer has reported non-consolidated revenues of NT$28.05 billion (US$951 million) for February 2011, down 15.9% sequentially and hitting the lowest monthly level since July 2010.

Revenues for the first two months of 2011 were NT$61.42 billion, showing a 35.6% decline from a year earlier.

Acer’s major contract partner, Compal, also saw revenues drop in February 2011 compared to the prior month and the same period in 2010.

Acer began shipping new models to its channel clients at the end of February, according to market observers. The notebook vendor is expected to post a substantial sequential rise in March revenues, said the observers, adding that its contract partners will also benefit.

ASRock, ECS February sales down over 30% on-month

News@com | Friday March 11 2011 15:38 | Comments (0)

ASRock and Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS) have reported sequential decreases in consolidated revenues for February 2011 of 37.1% and 30.5%, respectively.

Affected by fewer working days and labor shortages in China, ASRock’s consolidated revenues declined to NT$660 million (US$22.46 million) in February from the NT$1.05 billion posted in January. February sales also represented the lowest monthly level since June 2010.

ASRock said it has outsourced some motherboard production to Hong Kong-based Fittec Electronics due to the shortage of workers in China. Fittec has production facilities in China, and its Vietnam plant recently commenced operations.

Fellow motherboard company ECS registered NT$3.31 billion in February consolidated revenues, down over 30% from NT$4.76 billion in January. On an annual basis, however, February sales were up 25.7% from the same period of 2010.

Both ASRock and ECS expect March revenues to rebound following a weak February, and return to a sequential growth track.

Notebook players may postpone tablet PC launch schedule because of iPad 2

News@com | Thursday March 10 2011 11:12 | Comments (0)

Facing strong competition from Apple’s iPad 2, notebook brand vendors pointed out that iPad 2’s low price of US$499 is leaving tablet PC models with relatively higher prices no room for survival and there are already 2-3 notebook brand vendors that plan to postpone their tablet PC model’s launch schedule until after they redesign the specifications and reduce the related costs, according to sources from notebook players.

The sources pointed out that the tablet PC war that was expected in April may turn out to played only by the iPad product line, since iPad 2 is lighter and thinner than the previous generation device and is faster and has even more features at the same price level than the previous model. HP launches Sandy Bridge notebooks

News@com | Wednesday March 9 2011 17:14 | Comments (0)

Hewlett-Packard (HP) has launched several new Intel Sandy Bridge-based notebooks in Taiwan, and as the company is starting to mass ship the notebook models in March, its upstream OEM partners including Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry), Quanta Computer and Inventec will all benefit, according to sources from component makers.

HP Taiwan pointed out that WebOS will be the core of the company’s strategy in 2011 and the market will see HP design WebOS-based applications for the company’s three major product lines – tablet PCs, desktop PCs and notebooks in 2011.

Due to issues with Intel’s 6 series chipsets, HP reduced its original orders for February by about 5-10%, causing a reduction in Quanta’s overall notebooks shipments to only 3.2 million units and Inventec’s to only one million units in the month. But as Intel has fixed the chipset problem and has started shipping them again, HP’s orders should boost its partners’ shipments in March.

However, starting in April, Quanta’s orders from HP are expected to drop to only about 800,000-1.2 million units each month for the rest of the second quarter and the volume drop is expected to bring a significant pressure on the company, the sources noted.

HP’s newly launched notebooks are mostly from its Pavillion dv4, dv6 and g series. In addition to the upgraded processor, HP has adopted several new technologies and hardware such as USB 3.0, DLNA certification, CoolSense for temperature monitoring, wireless display and Best Audio sound system, into these models to allow better multimedia experience and faster transmission speed, according to HP Taiwan.

News@com | Tuesday March 8 2011 15:03 | Comments (0)

Global notebook brand vendors including Hewlett-Packard (HP), Acer, Asustek Computer and Micro-Star International (MSI), facing strong competition from Apple’s iPad, are changing strategies to allow their netbook models to feature capability of a tablet PC and hope the new strategy will help them land orders from the enterprise market, according to sources from upstream component makers.

HP, which originally let its handheld device department handling related R&D for its TouchPad tablet PC, is already considering to let its notebook department to deal with the development of the next-generation TouchPad and the team is already in discussion of the device’s specifications and market position, the sources noted.

The sources pointed out that the market’s strong attention of the tablet PC industry has significantly impacted the demand of notebook, but the sources believe netbook with features of tablet PC will still help the brand vendors to receive attention from enterprise buyers.

Asustek is already giving its 10.1-inch Eee Pad tablet PC an external keyboard to allow the device to become a fully-functional PC with USB extensibility.

Meanwhile, Acer is also planning to avoid from the current iPad 2 wave, and will develop new netbook with concept of tablet PC to counter Apple’s iPad 2.

In additional news, HP is set to ship 45-48 million notebooks including tablet PCs in 2011, but since the company only shipped 2.9-3 million and 2.5-2.6 million notebooks in January and February, respectively, HP has recently placed several rush orders to its upstream partners in order to catch up with its goal and the company internally is aiming to ship over four million notebooks in March.

Western Digital to become dominate HDD maker with Hitachi acquisition

News@com | Tuesday March 8 2011 14:55 | Comments (0)

With its purchase of Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi GST), hard drive maker Western Digital (WDC) will pad its lead in the global hard disk drive (HDD) market, giving it nearly double the market share of the number two supplier Seagate Technology. With the purchase, WDC will claim 49.6% share of global HDD shipments based on fourth-quarter totals, compared to 29.4% for Seagate. This will give WDC a lead of 20.2 percentage points over Seagate, up from a mere two points without the acquisition.

The Hitachi purchase will allow WDC to enter the critical enterprise HDD segment. WDC currently is only a marginal player in the enterprise HDD market, with nearly all of its sales going instead to the market for consumer drives, an area that includes products like desktop and mobile PCs, set-top boxes and video game consoles. Of all of the major HDD suppliers, Western Digital in the fourth quarter of 2010 had the smallest share of any company’s total shipments going to the enterprise segment, at less than 1%. In comparison, 65% of Seagate’s HDD shipments and 27% of Hitachi GST’s shipments went to the enterprise market. (continuare…)

Notebook players may postpone tablet PC launch schedule because of iPad 2

News@com | Tuesday March 8 2011 14:51 | Comments (1)

As for the first-generation iPad, Apple’s strategy of reducing its price to only US$399 has given its competitors strong pressure since most branded vendors do not yet have a model with such a price level that they can compete with.

Therefore, players are already working on rearrange their launch schedule and will delay the launch for another 1-2 months before they start selling; some models that were unveiled from before may even not appear in the channel.

The sources pointed out that tablet PCs will need to be priced below US$399 to have chance to enter the tablet PC battlefield, and none of the current Wintel or ARM/Android platform are capable of achieving such a price level. Therefore, the sources believe that non-iPad products achieving 20% of market share in 2011 would already be a great result for these players.
